ABOUT ASPHALT
Asphalt (also called "hotmix" or just "bitumen") is comprised of small stones (aggregate) mixed with liquid bitumen. It is created in a plant at high temperatures, and laid while still hot and malleable, then compacted to form a hard surface as it cools.

We supply asphalt in two colours: black and red.

Some asphalt companies will also lay a "brown" asphalt which is red asphalt without the oxide added. We can provide this colour on request, however we don't offer it to customers as we don't think it is a very nice colour.

A suitable basecourse (hardstand) must be constructed before asphalt is laid. The basecourse may be either roadbase, gravel or limestone and the thickness and material chosen will depend on the specific job. See Hardstand surfaces for more information
BLACK ASPHALT
Also called Granite hotmix. The stone (aggregate) used in this product is granite which is grey in colour. Dark grey to black when first laid and lightens only slightly over time.
Black asphalt is commonly available in 3 sizes:
7mm granite black hotmix
Used in normal traffic situations including driveways, carparks and footpaths. Usually laid at 25-30mm thick. The smaller stone size gives the smoothest finish, so is best for residential jobs.
10mm granite black hotmix
Used in heavy duty situations such as truck yards & forklifts. Usually laid at 30-50mm thick. The larger stone size gives a more course finish, but added strength.
14mm granite black hotmix
Most commonly used in very heavy duty settings. Usually laid at 50-60mm thick. The larger stone size gives a course finish, but added strength.
RED ASPHALT
This product is also called:
Red hotmix
Red gravelpave hotmix
Red bitumen
Orange bitumen/asphalt/hotmix
Red 1% asphalt
Ferricrete asphalt
Red oxide bitumen/asphalt/hotmix
The stone (aggregate) used in this product is gravel/ferricrete which is orange in colour, and a red oxide is also added to the mix. Red asphalt is a little more expensive than black. Red asphalt is very dark in colour when first laid, it appears almost black. The red oxide in this product oxidises over the years and turns a lighter shade of red over time. Areas in full sun will develop the red colouring more quickly than areas in shade. Many customers who request red asphalt ask if we have mistakenly laid black asphalt, but rest assured it will turn red over time.
